Freedom is almost never won peacefully. Have you forgotten the U.S. history? We had to win our freedom through war with Britain. The Iraqis are fighting for their freedom now against nihilists that don't want to see Democracy and freedom take root. They know that if that happens, it will be the end of their dream of a Taleban style gov't in every region of the Muslim world.

That sounds good in theory but in practice, I don't think that's what's happening. The Iraqis are not fighting for their freedom. Yes, there were a couple of small reports of Iraqis taking things into their own hands but that has stopped as quickly as it started. Their troops continue to be fodder for insurgents who pick them off like so many lined up beer bottles at rifle practice. And when Iraqis get angry, they usually blame the US, not the insurgents, for their woes.

And you really can't blame them.......there country is falling into disrepair. If the US were a landlord, we'd be in court by now and our buildings condemned. The living is very dangerous and the violence has spread to every corner of the country. The Iraqi standard of living has dropped preciptiously and does not look like its ready to recover any time soon.

Add to that mess, the incredible docility of the Shi-ites. The Sunni insurgents are doing every thing they can to provoke a civil war and the Shi-ites keep turning the other cheek. At first, I thought that was a good thing but now I wonder whether after nearly forty years of Bath party rule where their ranks were purged of fighters if the Shi-ites may have become nothing much than a field of cows waiting to be led to the slaughter.

Things are not good no matter how positive a spin is put on the mess.
