You have just focussed on the "as an energized and unwelcome force in American politics." part. The problem with that article is deeper than that. 1) it assumes there are just two groups, conservative and liberals. So in the context of the article, the media is falsely trying to draw a distinction between conservatives and mainstream. Since the liberals are out right now, obviously that shows bias. But in many things like Shiavo and Social Security, the mainstream isn't with the conservatives. Since they can't wrap their minds around that one...

The 6 to 1 ratio of conservative vs. liberal labels has more to do with who is pushing their agenda and who is laying low. It has little to do with actual bias. The whole study is slanted to "prove" a previously arrived at conclusion. It is like with PBS. The conservatives are all in a lather over a perceived liberal bias that few other Americans perceive. In fact, over 20% of American perceive PBS as being biased towards conservatives...
