Then Iraq fell apart some time before 2003, since they had 35 years of this condition. Saddam's rule depending on unexpectedly killing in fairly large numbers.

You might well say it was not functioning well. But you misunderstand my point. It falls apart for those on the receiving end. Iraq was doing fine for Saddam & friends. For his enemies, it was a pretty good hell. In Rhodesia, the whites were in charge, but ended up on the receiving end of terror. Things fell apart for them. In Iraq, its our friends who are on the receiving end. Far more civilians & Iraqi military/police are dying then insurgents, despite the recent US offensive helping to spike their losses. The death rate on the last month+ is not sustainable for Iraq. Something must give. With luck its the insurgents.
