This is where I think that the risk lies for the handset manufacturers and the opportunity lies for Apple

As someone here alluded to a few of posts ago, convenience and ease of use are paramount in these ... umm ... personal pleasure devices. Not having to wade through a menu six levels deep to get to what I want is a good reason to tolerate carrying a couple of standalone devices. Still, one never knows--NOK is well-regarded for its ease of use on the phone side of things. Perhaps it or some other manufacturer will get to a point where the difference between a phone's MP3 features and those of a standalone player is minimal. But this is going to take some time, at least 3 product generations IMO.

Then there's the PC side of the equation. MP3 phones will have to play nice with PCs since that's where people's music is being stored and managed these days. The integration between phone and PC will have to be seamless or pretty darn good to compel people to switch. Imagine the average user having to rejigger the thousands of tracks on their PC, not to mention the dozens of playlists they've created over time just so they can leave their Shuffle or Mini iPod at home and play their music on an MP3 phone instead. I wonder if people are willing go through that hassle without a big pay-off at the end of it.

OTOH, if I could just plug in the phone to the PC and have all of my existing music uploaded, like on my iPod ... well, then AAPL's future suddenly got a little cloudier ;) (Assuming, of course, AAPL is just sitting on its hands waiting for the end to come.)
