I once saw an episode of "Yes, Prime Minister" where Humphrey tried to explain that while it was for the good of society that his favorite opera company be heavily subsidized there simply was no government money available to support a local soccer team that was also bankrupt. He, and his rich upper-class friends, liked cheap opera tickets so it deserved a subsidy, the voters liked soccer but that had to stand or fall on its own.

The funny thing is that most PBS shows would fit in just fine on A and E, Bravo or even a PBS with commercials. Although I doubt Bill Moyers would last very long.

As far as the "we need to balance Fox" argument goes, don't they realize just where such thinking leads? If it's now the job of government to see that there is a balance of views in the media, and if it can be proven that FOX is conservative and say CNN and CBS are not, then it becomes the government's job to help set up another conservative network. And, anyway, why wasn't it their job in the 1980's to set up FOX?
