Although the investigating Officer concluded that the killing of the Iraqis was justified and in accordance with the ROE, he criticized Lt Pantano for the number of rounds he fired and concluded that the number of rounds fired was excessive and, as a result, Lt Pantano should received Commanding General's Non-Judicial Punishment for conduct unbecoming an officer. Glad to see Pantano will likely not be court-martialed. but this other charge is ridiculous. I don't believe it will stand either. Our Infantrymen, indeed our entire Infantry fighting philosophy, is based on overwhelming force and overwhelming firepower. Only a lawyer would think of punishing a Marine for using too many bullets while fighting for his life. I had a similar situation in Nam when a FSCOORD (fire support coordinator) complained I was using too much artillery and too many air strikes. My boss ordered him to go on a combat patrol with me. He never did and we never heard a peep out of him again.
