An excellent book that discusses manic depression (bipolar) is Kay Redfield Jamison's "An Unquiet Mind."

Jamison is a psychiatrist and is bipolar. She very nearly did herself in during one of her depressive states. She is now regulated on lithium and has a good grasp of her disease.

The book is well-written and gives one a good understanding of what the disease is and what its consequences can be.

Highly recommended reading.
