Re: I want to build a house with steel frame.

Hey, they built the World Trade Center with steel and look what happened to that! ;')

Steel has not been readily accepted in residential construction in the U.S., although you do find some pioneers working with the material.

For the most part, most steel is still used in industrial, institutional and commercial construction in the U.S.

I've certainly used quite a lot of steel framing in my commercial and institutional work.

It seems to me that it would be a quite sane and sensible choice in Curitiba. I don't know what the downside might be, other than the fact that the local tradesmen may not be used to handling the systems. However, you should look to commercial contractors who surely will be more familiar with steel framing than the usual shack contractors who typically handle residential work.

Re: I think we should move from bricks, blocks ad mortar. Wife heard maintenance problems and hanging things on the wall could be a problem.

I have a friend who lives in Taos, New Mexico. He has the ultimate in picture hanging convenience. The walls of his home are half-meter thick adobe (mud) walls. You can hang a heavy picture anywhere simply by driving a nail into the wall. This system is also remarkably effective at tempering the air. Keeping it cool in the summers and relatively warm in the winter.

With steel framing, you need to really consider the insulating shell you can create. In a hot climate, steel framing and a cheap insulation package can result in years of misery from excessive energy bills for air-conditioning, or a lot of sweating.

Re: She heard in the US you drive out buy the things and do it yourself. We may not have these conveniencies here

There are major U.S. corporations devoted to this trade. Home Depot and Lowe's are among the largest. The D-I-Y market in the U.S. is quite large. I'm often amazed at the number of people I see shopping there.

Re: Wife heard maintenance problems and hanging things on the wall could be a problem.

I've never heard of any maintenance problems with steel framed structures, the World Trade Center excepted. The problem with hanging things on walls is a real issue, though there are plenty of clever solutions for this.

Here you go, get lost discussing your "issues" here:
