These old basements were designed to take in water, otherwise the walls bulge and the stones begin to move...I think dampness is the nature of the beast in these old houses.

That reminds me of something I'd forgotten, that years ago I asked a man who was working on something down there, maybe the furnace, about the dampness (it was less, but there), and he said the same thing: It's the way these old houses are made, and it's been doing okay this way for going on a couple of centuries, don't fix something that ain't broke.

I think until there's standing water or a smell of mold, we're going to settle for opening the cellar doors in good weather. Ish's footing tiles suggestion is one I"ll make a mental note of, but it seems too major at this point...
