Remember this part from the article I posted about the Mongols and Baghdad? Worse, from a strategic point of view, Mustasim had recently angered the Shiites by various insults and offenses, such as throwing the poem of a famous Shiite poet in the river. Now vengeful Shiites volunteered help to the MONGOLS in Mosul and other places along their march. (A really interesting read if anyone missed it - Message 21261815 That was 1250 something. ~800 years later here we are trying to put the Shiites in power? All we did is start a Civil War in Iraq. This will go on long after our adventure is over. John
