I'm not exactly sure where the individualization of the two from one actually takes place; do you?

The individualism takes place before conception. I'm a little hazy on the lifecycle of the egg before conception , but in the case of sperm there is a complex process which mixes the two sets of chromosomes in the male (from his two parents). First the chromosomes divide into four sets, then they start mixing and divide into two cells with paired chromosomes, and then split again into two cells with only one set of chromosomes (a random mixture from the male's two parents). One of these cells, known as a polar body, becomes inert and dies while the other becomes a sperm. Repeat a million times before sex. The millions of sperm involved in a sex act are not all identical, they are already individual, and meet up with an egg that is also an individual (through an even longer process).
