Bill, regarding NT Inevitability:

Based on my experience with both UNIX and NT, I think NT still has some catching up to do. But it may not take more than two more generations of NT to catch up with UNIX.

Scott McNealy is a bright guy. I think that his low cost UNIX server will be a nice cash machine that will give Sun Microsystems the breathing room to develop a new vision. Intel's Merced will be a watershed for Sun Microsystems. It is in Intel's interests to achieve high margins on their best technology. No problem for Sun. Sun can switch to Merced give Intel the margin they want, and sell UNIX on Merced-based machines.

I doubt if many will agree, but I believe Sun could be competitive selling high-end NT systems as well. Sun has experience solving problems on a scale that companies like Compaq haven't. If I was going to switch a complex system from UNIX to NT and Sun was supporting both systems, I would get Sun to perform the transition.
