What? What I said made perfect sense, unless you have been so brainwashed by American propaganda all your life that you can't see the forest through the trees.

The Soviet Union "threat" was way overblown to justify the rediculous expenditures (trillions) to prosecute the Cold War and feed the war machine. Sure, they didn't like our system (or was it really us who were the antagonists in the Cold War?). But, the Soviets had no intentions of invading and occupying the U.S. That was just rightwing John Birch Society paranioa and utter nonsense perpetrated by conservative spinmeisters. The atom bomb ensured that an invasion of the U.S. would never be attempted, and there was no indication that they actually had an interest to do so. What the Soviets did have was a pretty impressive military that challenged our quest for world domination and our precious resources, like oil. So, we being the world domineering power we are, built up our military to ensure the Soviets would not dominate or threaten our resources. It worked, and perhaps it was all worth it, but it wasn't done to protect us from a Soviet invasion, because that just wasn't in the cards, any serious military analyst knew that once the nuclear age was here.

Now, with the Soviet Union gone, we finally get to see what an imperialistic power the U.S. really is. We have no serious challengers in the world, so now we're invading and occupying countries at will. Something we wouldn't have done back in Cold War days.

I am very serious about the fact that statistically an American is far more likely to die from some mundane preventable cause like random street crime or unsafe roads, then the remote chance of being killed in a terrorist incident. The figures don't lie. Around 1,000 people per year die in terrorist incidents worldwide, very few in Western countries. I'm not saying we shouldn't take the threat of terrorism seriously and do all we can to fight it, but the fact is you have a greater chance of being struck and killed by lightning than being killed in a terrorist attack. We have domestic terrorists, they're called common street criminals. We should do all we can to put police on the streets to protect us from these terrorists and then they'll be ready to defend us from foreign terrorists as well. There's a lot more we could be doing to fight terrorism on the home front.
