I very much hope it isn't true that we are so stupid as to toss the Quran into a toilet because I am an American and don't like it that we're so hated that even though our dollar is at a new low & we're a huge bargain we can't get tourists because the whole f-ing world hates us since Bush.

You seem not to have read what I wrote, or maybe just didn't want to respond to the point:

~The charge was not disputed by either of the two Defense Department officials (including the one who did challenge another part of the story). There is no claim that either DOD official even cautioned Newsweek, or asked them for the source, or said they wanted to look into it themselves so hold off on publication.

I assume you share my anger at those defense department officials who didn't dispute the Quran charge but did challenge another part of the story submitted to them by Newsweek before the magazine published the charge -- though you didn't say so.

If an editor submits points a b c and d to the DOD, and the DOD guys between them only challenge point a, the editor might conclude that they aren't challenging b, c and d.

That would make him not a liar, but naive or incompetent or inadequately thorough. It would make the DOD guys incompetent or imply that they didn't take exception to b, c and d.
