China wants North Korea to have nukes to act as a counterbalance in the Taiwan dispute. I think the North Korean nuclear programme is just a fig leaf to cover the real deal which is China giving North Korea nuclear weaponry to threaten South Korea and Japan, to prevent them supporting Taiwan in the event of joint manoeuvres with Russia "on Chinese territory" resulting in a serious fracas with Taiwan and maybe the USA.

An interesting and original thought, Mq. I doubt, however, that China has provided the NKs with nuclear technology since (1) the advances would have taken place a lot more quickly, (2) there is evidence that the Pakistanis are the source, and (3) China would suffer horribly from a diplomatic angle should it be found out to be doing so before the time is ripe. China is simply happy to have NK ruffle everyones' feathers at no cost to the Chinese, who can capitalize on their influence on the phantasmagorically deluded NKs.

I disagree with the notion that the Chinese and the Russians will undertake joint maneuvers on the "renegade province." If anything, China will do so alone. Even this is doubtful, in my estimation, because the cost to China's economy would simply be too great.

The Chinese are patiently waiting for the situation to get more delicate before they extract a price for bursting the NK's delusions of grandeur.
