Merrill Lynch maintained a "buy" rating for Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ) and said the computer hardware giant's new storage products could bolster sagging storage sales but noted that challenges remain. The company is widely expected to unveil a new midrange "EVA" product line at a trade conference on Monday. "We believe that HP's new EVA products will provide a much more competitive midrange offering against storage-focused vendors EMC (nyse: EMC - news - people ) and Network Appliance (nasdaq: NTAP - news - people ). Still, HP faces challenges on the competitive front. Plus, its execution has been weak lately," said Merrill. "In conjunction with HP's larger direct sales force (which was increased by 25% last year), the refreshed EVA may help HP gain some share against, or at least stem further market share losses from, EMC and NetApp." The research firm noted that Emulex (nyse: ELX - news - people ), Brocade Communications Systems (nasdaq: BRCD - news - people ), and QLogic (nasdaq: QLGC - news - people ) "should benefit from any strength at HP as HP is a large customer for each of these vendors."
