The perpetrator, if there is one, is the senior U.S. government official who gave Isikoff the story.

Situations like this, where the right-wing does not seem to check facts or use any logic at all in trying to figure out what happened,makes them all seem very biased and unthinking to me. Ludicrous, in fact.
