Because I have a basic understanding about how political journalism works. Magazines like Newsweek and Time rely on senior U.S. government sources for a whole lot of information, and have been operating that way for decades.

If Newsweek comes out and says they made up the senior U.S. government official, and says that they didn't have the Pentagon check the story before it was printed after all, then I would believe that Newsweek was trying to dupe us all.

Please let me know if that has happened, and I will be happy to admit that I was wrong. As I said when I wrote my first post today about the story, there may be more current information I don't have. I did read the retraction Bill posted, but it didn't meet the criteria I listed above.
