40-50k for a family of four sucks. Maybe in NY, LA, DC, San Francisco, or other expensive area. In a lot of the country its not so bad. Even in DC $50k is about average. Plenty of people can support a family of four on $50k, and they are not mired in poverty. Maybe they can't buy cars for the kids when they become teenagers, at least not new ones. Maybe they can't eat out 5 times a week, but they don't have a lower class life style. I don't think there is a single country in the world were the average wage is above that 40 to 50k range. My dad supported a family of 13 on about $100k, in the DC area. With inflation that would be a bit higher but the DC area is more expensive than most of the country and a family of 13 costs a lot more than a family of four. Tim
