Actually, you can throw VoIP over wifi or wimax.

VoIP can run over any underlying transport mechanism.

It's actually pretty easy and quick to wifi enable an existing voip unit with an experienced team if one excludes fcc/ul for alpha.

But I agree with the article, VoIP handset cogs need to come down - two design things there, seem to recall, maybe the cost of platform? I don't recall what, but could find out, if anyone needs to know.

Business model question: how does the cellular design platform cost compare to the wifi design platform?

Hasn't any firm been chartered to do this yet for consumer world? The industry really needs a strong consumer VoIP handset player with further consumer reach that's not afraid of wifi/wimax.
