I am taking the liberty of translating an incisive and extremely well written comment from El Universal, one of Mexico's leading newspapers, concerning Fox's recent attack of footmouthitis. Though I don't agree with all of what it says, I do hope I have done this excellent piece justice. Original follows the translation for Spanish readers:

What the wind took away from Fox [a reference to GWTW.]
The nickels are falling slowly. We are starting to understand many things about President Fox, after his inopportune and badly interpreted statements about Mexicans doing the work that "blacks would not even do."
We are sorry to say that the current polemic will continue. The US State Department has now been heard. Richard Boucher, its spokesman, asked that the Mexican Government clarify President Fox's words.
Although clarifying something like what Fox said is nearly impossible (instead of a clarification, an apology should be made), this column will explore some of the reasons whiich could have led our President to make such insensitive remarks.
It undoubtoudly has to do with his formation. A President with the idiosyncracies, and lack of grace, of an hacienda owner is required in order to say publicly what he dreams.
And what are Fox's dreams? He has said it many times, hasn't he, when he refers to the wind which will take him back to his ranch? He reminisces about the 19th century Porfiriate (is this why he supports Santiago Creel [scion of an aristocratic Mexican family with its roots in 19th century silver mining]?) when great Mexican haciendas were very much like deep South US plantations.
Note: we refer to the model. The Anglo-Saxon or Spanish owner who was the master. The ladies of the house, the profligate heirs and, on the other side, all of those who did the heavy lifting. Some were slaves, some not, but they all did the same work.
Think about two movies; rent them if you must.
We refer to GWTW, starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, and directed by Victor Fleming and Giant (with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean under the direction of George Stevens).
In one of those movies.....imagine Mistress Martha [Foxs's wife] as Scarlett O'Hara. The role fits her. Do you remember her?
But let us return to the model to which we originally referred. In both movies, there is a difference. In GWTW, the ones who did the hard work were African slaves.
In Giant, Texas was the setting. And those who did the hard work that African Americans previously did, but which were not formally slaves, were Mexicans. The same Mexicans which in another time owned the setting, but who were turned into peons after Texas's Independence and later annexation to the US.
The great owners of haciendas and ranches always looks, of course, for cheap labor. Does the story ring a bell?
Mexicans have since then for more than a hundred years done the work that African Americans did in other states such as Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama.
Why would the US react as it has to Fox's comment? The first answer is obvious, of course: because the comment was insensitive, unfortunate and racist, even though the President did not know that such was the case.
You might counter that the US is the most racist nation in the world and you would be right. But it is also one of the most hypocritical or politically correct, as it is said now.
If it defends its inhabitants in addition to any other romantic reason you might think about, it also "sells" democracy. And in a democracy votes are counted, not weighed.
Remember that making men and countries "free and democratic" is, also, a great opportunity to invade nations, make war, reactivate an economy and, in one of them, win a bit of oil.
The Republican government of the past 12 years (that is, the Bush dynasty) has gone to a lot of trouble to cleanse its image of racism which it enjoyed for decades, when the only pro-African American and pro-Hispanic group were the Democrats.
One of the dynasty's feats was the inclusion of Colin Powell, or even better, C. Rice, who is a woman. In Mexico, we also have a distinguished Republican who in addition to being a personal friend of Bush, Jr. also has these characteristics: Tony Garza.
But one only needs to briefly look at the US Census Bureau to see what this means to African Americans.
According to the November 2002 data, of the 128,154,000 registered voters, 14,204,000 of them werere African Americans and 8,196,000 were Hispanic.
These are the ones who vote, because at a population level, Hispanics already outnumber African Americans by more than a million, and the gap is growing....
The President cannot justify his comment on the ground that he is not a politician. But what a lack of vision as an entrepreneur! Calculate briefly the size of the African American market which consumes Mexican products.
I hope they do not decide to boycott us.

Lo que el viento se llevó de Fox
Poco a poco van cayendo los veintes. Comenzamos a entender muchas cosas del presidente Fox, luego de sus desatinadas y mal interpretadas dicen en Presidencia declaraciones sobre que los mexicanos hacen trabajo en Estados Unidos que "ni los negros" quieren hacer.
Lamentamos informar que la polémica seguirá. Ahora sí el Departamento de Estado norteamericano dijo algo. Richard Boucher, su vocero, pidió al gobierno de México que aclare las palabras de Fox.
Aunque aclarar algo así es medio imposible (más bien debería ofrecerse una disculpa), esta columna le plantea hoy algunas de las razones que pudieron llevar a nuestro Presidente a enunciar una declaración con ese grado tan superlativo de insensibilidad.
Tiene que ver con su formación, sin duda. Se necesita a un Presidente mexicano con una idiosincrasia (en este caso también podría ser un caso de idiosingracia ) de hacendado para decir de manera pública con lo que sueña.
¿Y con qué soñaría Fox? Bueno, lo ha dicho de una u otra manera muchas veces, ¿no? Con, digamos, que el viento se lo lleve de regreso a su rancho. Con la reminiscencia, en ese sentido, del siglo XIX porfirista (¿será por eso tanto apoyo a Santi Creel?) cuando las grandes haciendas mexicanas eran muy parecidas a las plantaciones sureñas de Estados Unidos.
Y ojo: nos referimos al modelo. El amo español o anglosajón que era el patrón. Las señoras de la casa, los hijos herederos y a veces despilfarradores y, por otro lado, todos los que hacían el trabajo duro. Algunos eran esclavos, otros no, pero hacían lo mismo.
Piense usted en dos películas o, si no las ha visto, anímese a rentarlas.

En Gigante , el territorio era tejano. Y los que hacían el mismo trabajo duro que los futuros afroamericanos, pero sin ser esclavos de manera formal, eran mexicanos. Los mismos mexicanos que otrora habían sido dueños de ese territorio, pero que se habían vuelto peones tras la independencia de Texas y su posterior anexión a Estados Unidos.
El gran hacendado y/o ranchero siempre busca, pues, la mano de obra barata, ¿le suena conocida la historia?
Y entonces los mexicanos no hoy sino desde hace más de 100 años hacen el trabajo que los afroamericanos hicieron en otros estados, como Georgia, Lousiana, Alabama.
Ahora, ¿por qué Estados Unidos reacciona de esta manera ante un comentario de Fox? La primera respuesta es clara, por supuesto: porque es insensible, desafortunada y racista, aunque el Presidente no se haya dado cuenta.
Claro, usted dirá que también Estados Unidos es el país más racista del mundo y tendría razón. Pero también es uno de los más hipócritas o políticamente correcto, como quiera decirle.
Si defiende a sus habitantes además de cualquier otra razón romántica que pudiera pensar es porque "vende" democracia. Y en una democracia, los votos se cuentan y no se pesan.
Recuerde que hacer a los hombres y naciones "libres y democráticos" es, también, una gran oportunidad para invadir naciones, hacer guerras, reactivar economía y en una de ésas, también, ganar algo de petróleo.
A los gobernantes republicanos en los últimos 12 años (es decir, la dinastía Bush) les ha costado mucho trabajo quitarse la imagen de racistas que tuvieron durante décadas, cuando los únicos proafroamericanos y pro-hispanos eran solamente los demócratas.
Uno de sus logros más acabados son inclusiones como las de Colin Powell o más aún, la misma Condoleezza Rice, quien además es mujer. En México también tenemos a un distinguido republicano, quien además de ser amigo personal de Bush Jr., cumple con estas características: Tony Garza.
Y basta asomarse al US Census Bureau (la Oficina del Censo de Estados Unidos) para ver lo que significa en este sentido la población afroamericana.
Según los datos de noviembre de 2002, de los 128 millones 154 mil votantes registrados, 14 millones 204 mil de ellos son afroamericanos y 8 millones 196 mil, de origen hispano.
Esos son los que votan, porque a nivel de población, los hispanos según cifras oficiales ya superan a los afroamericanos en por lo menos 1 millón más… y creciendo.
El Presidente no va a poder disculparse de su comentario por no ser político. Pero, para acabarla, como empresario, ¡qué falta de visión! Calcule usted el mercado afroamericano que consume productos que vienen de México. Ojalá y no se les ocurra boicotearnos. |
