It contained a phone card which allowed Spanish police to quickly zero in on Islamofascist bombers as the prime suspects – and the Socialist party to embarrass the government, during the few days remaining until elections, regarding the government’s suggestion that the bombings might have been the work of Basque separatists. One police officer said something like “Without the card we would have been sitting here twiddling our thumbs”. This post at American Thinker links to Spanish blogger Barcepundit, who lays out information suggesting the police may have put the backpack together themselves. Through intelligence work the police may have known immediately that it was an Islamofascist bombing, and moved swiftly to help the Socialists. Information that the attack was an Islamic extremist bombing could have gone in the other direction, however – from the Socialists to their friends in the police – if allegations are true that the Socialists have their own longstanding ties to the Islamofascists. In any event, "discovering" the backpack insulates the police and Socialists from questions about exactly how they got on the trail of the true culprits so fast. Such questions might yet raise another, more horrid possibility: that the Socialists and/or police knew about the bombings beforehand. If they had the channels to get instant, accurate information right after, what flowed through those channels - both from and to the terrorists - before the attacks?
