Newsweek would not describe a clerk as a "senior official." They have clearly stated that he was a senior official who had given them reliable information in the past. Even though we don't know his identity, he is a Pentagon official, and the White House certainly does know his identity. Do you logically believe Newsweek would make something up and destroy its credibility when the White House would somehow call them on this kind of misstatement?

The official was sure of the information when he confirmed it to Newsweek. He became uncertain of it at a later date.

I am not sure how you (or anyone else) can seriously claim that after the Pentagon and Centcom both reviewed the article and did correct other things in it, in a prepublication review, Newsweek should have done anything other than assume that the part of the article about the Quoran flushing was accurate. Does anyone here know anything about journalistic process? Saying what you hope is true but ignoring facts and common sense just doesn't work very well, I don't think.
