Well, I'm not sure it was a great idea to announce it 9 months before the product is ready, but perhaps marketing research indicated that SGI wouldn't lose any sales due to customers postponing their buying O2's and Octanes. On the other hand, sales of graphics workstations have been going down anyways, while sales of servers have been on a fast uptrend. On the third hand, some customers who might have been thinking of abandonding SGI in favor of Intergraph or Compaq or Dell might give SGI another try. Hard to say. It certainly is a risky announcement. Next 3 quarters are going to be very interesting.
