This is from Pentagon spokesman Larry DiRita, and I am first going to take it out of context:

“[A] Koran may have fallen to the floor in the course of searching a cell.”

There is an admission from the military, though removed from its context, If Newsweek had used that rather than falsely asserting that investigators had found that a Koran had been flushed, perhaps fewer people would have died in the ensuing riots.

Here’s the full quote, as published by the New York Times:

“There is a command philosophy that is clearly one of treating religious items, including the Koran, with a great deal of respect,” he said. “That being said, there have been instances, and we’ll have more to say about it as we learn more, but where a Koran may have fallen to the floor in the course of searching a cell.”

According to the paper, DeRita also “said the military was still reviewing whether there had been any incidents of abusing the Koran at the prison and said no methodical examination of this question had occurred before Newsweek published its May 1 article.” The question had not even been asked before Newsweek determined that it had been answered.

You know, millions of Americans get their news from liars.
