A lot of people think the current model overstates inflation. If this is true, Uncle Sam could save money by paying smaller Social Security and other entitlement increases pegged to inflation. But that is politically unpopular so the question has been pushed to the background.

I haven't heard of anyone saying that inflation is understated. Do you have any sources?
