That's one of the possible solutions. The other is that they were written by different sources from the start, which is why there are two creation stories in Genesis. And why David and another guy both killed Goliath. Also, it is possible that the lost books found under the palace at the time of, I think, Joash, were the originals and they'd been using other copies before rediscovering them.
