I agree that it is better to enforce the rules by not banning people. But people who do not moderate their posting behavior--and in fact become even more badly behaved--when I warn them really don't present me with any other alternatives except banning. I am certainly not going to allow an individual to make the whole thread an ugly place by continuing to act out under those circumstances.
