Former California state Assembly speaker Antonio Villaraigosa easily defeated incumbent James K. Hahn in the runoff race for mayor of Los Angeles, according to results available this morning, thrusting onto the national stage a new Latino political figure at a time of growing competition for the Hispanic vote in America.

Villaraigosa will be the city's first Latino mayor since 1872 and the first challenger to oust an L.A. mayor in more than three decades. According to unofficial returns available early today, Villaraigosa, who had been serving on the Los Angeles City Council, took about 59 percent of votes cast against 41 percent for Hahn, who beat Villaraigosa in 2001.
