valentino,

Good to hear from you. Let me add something here:

1. Two building blocks make up an ISP POP (point of presence) : Modem ports and switching/routing. Robotics's Total Control is very strong in port density thus lower cost and space requirement per port, in additional to superior performance. Ascend, on the other hand, is stronger at the switching/routing side.

The acquisition of Nextsar further strengthened Ascend's switching offering putting tremendous pressure on Robotics. Robotics figured that if they can integrate 3Com's switching and routing technology while maintaining advantage on Modem port, they can beat back Ascend. The rest is history.

The battle on ISP POP market will be determined by who has the highest performance POP-IN-A-BOX (all in one) with highest port density. The task is fairly easy for the new 3Com but is practically mission impossible for Ascend because it totally relies on Rockwell for Modem technology.

Rockwell completely focuses on CPE market, one chip set per port. You duplicate hardware if you want more ports. Robotics, on the other hand, let each DSP chip hanle multiple ports, therefore achieving much higher port density (and of course lower cost per port). I don't see how Ascend can possibly overcome this.

2. Robotics people now run two out of three Business Units and 80% of revenue in the new 3Com. As you said, they are movers and shakers. I'm confident that they will take 3Com to a new era.
