"The infrastructure is currently being developed that would allow a user to seamlessly pass from a VOIP connection to a cell connection and back again without ever losing a beat. The cost savings would be substantial. But this whole process, and thus the heyday, may be years away."

I've given this a great deal of thought and I think the PDA might be only popular with gadget freaks.
The ideal way would be for your laptop to connect to the net and look for VOIP then use bluetooth to connect the VOIP connection to the mobil phone to save you money.

Thus, if you want to go light.. you carry just your small cell phone, but if you pack your laptop, perhaps in your car when making sales calls, then you have a cheap connection. Heck, you could pull up outside Starbucks or any other free hot spots and make your calls from your car...

I actually started to do something like this in 1998 using cheap, unlicensed spectrum home phone technology but I was not able to get anyone interested in it and I moved on... I was already gone from HP and I tried to get a letter inside but it all got hung up in the CDA process where they really didn't want to hear about my ideas....

It would be one heck of a selling feature too for HP notebooks to work with HP phones where all you need to do is find a free hot spot to make calls.
