Richard Gere: 'Drop the stuff'
18/05/2005 14:26 - (SA)

Petra - Hollywood star and human rights activist Richard Gere wants Palestinians and Israelis to "think out of the box" and change the way they relate to each other in peace talks.

Gere was attending a Nobel laureate conference in this ancient city and said that the current climate was not helping both sides work for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

"It's setting up a dynamic that is going to be an impediment to finding a human solution, especially when there's an opening now to doing something different, something fresh," Gere said in an interview in this world heritage attraction built 2 000 years ago.

Asked what could help break the dynamic, Gere replied: "Free thinking."

"What we've been doing has led us nowhere but to more conflict," he said. "Let's 'think out of the box'."

"The irony is everyone on both sides and the governments know each other very well. They can talk to each other if they can just drop the stuff, literally dropping where they are coming from and the agendas," the Hollywood star said.

Gere has made several trips to Israel and the West Bank to encourage their leaders to put behind past differences. He works with the United States-based Peacemaker Circle International, a group that operates in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
