Reading between the lines, it looks like some students and their parents complained to PETA AND the school district. PETA wrote a letter to the superintendent last week. The donkey basketball event was canceled. PETA does write news releases about the campaigns it participates in, for the altruistic reason that word will spread and people will realize just how cruel and stupid donkey basketball is.

Since the article you posted didn't include PETA's press release, it is impossible to fully understand what the conflict here might be, or how much credit PETA claimed. A and B can both be true! I am just delighted that somehow the event was canceled, so those donkeys will not suffer.

For those of you who do not yet realize how cruel donkey basketball is, here is a bit of information (from PETA, of course):

During donkey basketball games, the animals are frequently mishandled by participants who have no prior experience with them—they are often punched, kicked, yanked, screamed at, or whipped when found to be "uncooperative" by their riders. The games also pose a risk to human participants: An Illinois man was awarded $110,000 after being injured in a donkey basketball game, and last April, during another donkey game, a Wisconsin state senator fell off a donkey and broke her leg.
