Also, the rise of Islam if anything helped the Roman Empire. It ended nearly 800 years of war with the Persian Empire. Overlay the map of Persian Empire on top of the Islamic lands and you'll see little difference. The "Rise of Islam" was primarily the defeat of Persian Empire which was due to Iranians' unwillingness to fight for a regime they did not support (many people were literally dragged into the battle field in chains). This lack of support was directly related to the empirical adventures of Persia (and Rome).

However for the first 200~400 years after the defeat of Persian Empire there were many uprisings (more in the first 200 years but still quite a few in the next 2 centuries). As a result the Caliphs had their hands full and could not give proper attention to Rome. Europeans should count their blessings for this or by now they would have been mostly Muslims.
