A lot of people who reenact historical events, or work at Renaissance faires or things like that, are totally fascinated with history AND wish they had lived in another time, or really enjoy visiting there. I have known some of these people (anecdotal evidence--sorry) and they were all highly educated, very intelligent mature adults.

The Trekkie phenomenon seems to be more related to escaping reality in general and reverting to an eternal childhood sort of fantasy, but kind of dark at the same time. What kind of obsession makes it perfectly okay to never develop as an adult or hold a real job or stand for three days in the rain to buy a ticket, or wear really ridiculous costumes with funny ears in public? Being a Trekkie may also provide a cover which attracts vulnerable children.

I noted that in the url you provided, a an important statement was made. While many child molesters turn out to be Trekkies, most Trekkies are not child molesters. At that level, the general concept we are discussing does not seem offensive to me.

Are you a Trekkie, Ionesco?
