You took a ferry? Lucky you! I love the Washington ferry system. Such a relaxing way to travel, with your car all tucked in for a nice nap and everything.

I did.

I enjoy using the ferries, but in recent years, they've less user-friendly.

As a result of a labor dispute between management and the union that represented workers who provided food services on the ferries, there has been no food service on the ferries for a couple years. The only offerings are in a vending machine containing potato chips and candy bars.

It seems the union believed grill and fry cooks and cashier's should make something like $18/hour with full benefits. The concessionaire could not operate a profitable business paying those kind of wages and pulled out of the contract.

I do understand that there has been a resolution and there may be food service on the ferries again.

The schedule seems to have been pared back some.

I missed the 4:15 ferry out of Bremerton and rather than waiting until 5:30 for the next ferry and then having a 60 minute ride, I decided to drive north and then around to the Bainbridge Island ferry, also leaving at 5:30 but with a 30 minute ride to Seattle. I made it, but barely so because traffic in Kitsap County has gotten quite bad since the last time I was there.

I used to think I'd like living on Bainbridge, but I would not like to be tied to the ferry schedule. Also, it's $12.50 for car and driver each way, so it gets expensive if you have business across the Sound that requires a car.

The other problem with Bainbridge is there are too damn many liberals there. <ggg>
