First of all you can stop them...easily, just pass legislation that bans assault weapons. There is no need for any person to own these guns. I agree in individual rights however the common good must also be considered. This is done in America everyday... for example, no smoking in designated areas (to protect other's health), ban on leaded gasoline, asbestos, environmental laws etc. You may say guns don't kill people, people kill people, yet we have speed limits on roads. Not every individual has the right to do what they want, how they want, where they want. We live in a society, we are not animals where Darwinian law reigns above all else. We are supposed to be an intelligent species. By extension of your logic owning nuclear weapons should also always be a person's choice. You are probably thinking that is a ridiculous statement and it is, just as your statement is. I am sure you are against foreign countries arming themselves with these types of weapons, but can you blame them, every Bob Yankee owns an assault rifle. Maybe you are naive in thinking that gun owners are responsible, maybe they are but your homes get robbed too, or worse you piss off a son / grandson and they decide to go on a shooting spree...but what am I talking about that would never happen. The only way to be sure is to ban assault weapons. Anyway, you can't be much of a marksman if you need a semi automatic to kill a deer! You have given up much in America already, slaves, women not having the right to choose, segregation, women's rights to vote, smoking, etc, why not give up assault weapons...it will happen eventually because we are an intelligent species..at least most of us are anyway. |
