Well not to familiar with Maine but I do not think it got to the ridiculous prices in the bigger cities. I remember that CitiBank was auctioning apartments at 1/2 the original purchase price during 92/93 and there were few takers.

I know hedge funds specializing in RE were unwilling to buy office buildings for $80 per sq. foot on Madison Avenue in MidTown NYC

MAny were happy to sell for 120 per sq foot residential apartments in prime location, like Central Park West below 90th street etc.
