Based on things Jochen has posted before, all public schools in Germany require religious instruction or ethical instruction, but kids go to classes about their own religion. Catholics get instructed in Catholicism, Protestants in Protestantism, and now apparently Muslims in Islam. You are probably aware that the German government also collects tithes for the various denominations.
