Barry Goldwater the father of modern conservativism was outraged that the religious right was trying to tell him he's not a moral person unless he did A, B and C. He told them to butt out of politics. But they refused to butt out. In order to win, Reagan embraced the religious right (though Reagan was never a religioous man himself and neither was GW Bush).

So now we have this alliance of corporate special interests, neocon hawks, oil companies and extremist evangelicals basically running the country. People are waking up and recognizing that they really don't like or trust this bunch at all.
