"The Beluga coal field on the west side of the Inlet has provoked a great deal of interest and study in recent years because of the potential magnitude of development. Results of exploratory drilling have indicated that in excess of 2 billion tons of coal are close enough to the surface to allow surface mining. Several of these large deposits are located 12 to 15 miles from tidewater. The coal is subbituminous which has an average heating value of 7,600 to 10,000 BTU/Ib, and deposits range in thickness from a few inches to more than 50 feet. The coal is low in sulfur (.2 to .3 percent)."
