Riley,

Tonto's post about fundamentals (wage/sales ratios) is a valid question. There are a couple problems with it though:

- typical latin wages are closer to a dollar.
- typical latin hours are closer to 600 per quarter (ten hour workdays, crappy lunch hours)

- Most importantly, he has left out conversion to local currencies. Panama for example uses dollars. A wage earner there gets about a dollar and ten cents an hour as per the constitutional minimum wage. Tonto was in Costa Rica, which is actually a pretty healthy country economically speaking. They don't even have an army, and spend 50% of their GDP on education. There is a good reason that OVIS doesn't have factories in Costa Rica. The Dominican Republic doesn't use dollars. When I was there a few years ago, my dollars bought a lot of local currency - yet the local currency had a local purchasing power similar to the dollar. This doesn't help you at all if you want to buy importad american products, which are sold at dollar conversion rates, but for local materials, it is like winning the lottery.

Having a business that makes american dollars and then uses them to pay third world costs is a mighty big bargain.

***** none the less, I wouldn't care if OVIS was a lemonade stand as long as I knew it had been shorted and my friends held the float. Welcome to the wonderful world of high finance. Call your certs, because that is what this is about.
