US farm groups urge Congress to address natural gas prices

Washington (Platts)--18May2005

The Agriculture Energy Alliance, a national coalition of 60 farm groups and agribusinesses, called on the US Congress to include in any comprehensive energy legislation provisions to boost domestic natural gas supplies and stabilize prices. "We must diversify our fuel supply, drill in new areas and allow permits for new port terminals to import liquefied natural gas, or else we must agree to watch our farm and fertilizer manufacturing sectors continue to erode," said Bob Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Leon Corzine, president of the National Corn Growers Assn, noted that corn farmers are hurt by high natural gas prices because gas is a major component of fertilizers and is used as a fuel source to dry corn and irrigate crops. High natural gas prices and low-cost imports have forced 20 US fertilizer plants to close in recent years, making US farmers increasingly import dependant, AEA said. The US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is currently debating its version of the energy bill.
