It's the fear of the urbanite for the people who live in the country.

City people really think once you're out of ex-urbia the people have horns and tote automatic riles.

You see it in the attitude of the bi-coastal cities toward the rest of the country, and is responsible for some of the disconnect between the blue and red areas.

If you look at the long term demographics, you can see more conservative people withdrawing from the coasts and moving into the interior regions.
