Birth control for students OK'd

Associated Press

The Santa Rosa school board has unanimously approved a proposal to allow birth control pills and condoms to be dispensed at a health clinic at Elsie Allen High School.

Under the terms of a two-year contract between the school board and the Southwest Community Health Center, which runs the Elsie Allen Health Center, clinic staff may prescribe and dispense various forms of contraceptives, including the patch and the morning-after pill.

The board approved the proposal Wednesday on a one-year pilot basis, effective July 1.

Naomi Fuchs, executive director of the Southwest Community Health Center, told the board that the teen pregnancy rate in southwest Santa Rosa is among the highest in the state.

Orlean Koehle, president of the state chapter of Eagle Forum, a nationwide ``pro-family movement,'' said the role of the school was to educate kids, not to provide them with family planning services.
