Those angry parents should get mad at the face in the mirror. My mother worked full-time to support me and my disabled dad and still found time to teach me to read at age five, using the comic strips in the daily Milwaukee Journal. It apparently worked; for our first grade "Reading Circle", the first book I read was the complete "Gulliver's Travels". Mom was a collector of books, lots of first editions, so I was no stranger to books and reading as a normal part of living. Thankfully, we had no TV until I was in the 5th grade. Too bad everyone doesn't have the advantages I had.
