Countries do not stay on top forever

And the US won't either, but to take anything that is happening now and project it in to a major decline for the US shows a lack of perspective.

What generals are you talking about and why are they such great experts in the US budget over the next 10 years that I should defer to them?

What? Do you think I remember every general who makes a comment? They said the war could go on for another 9-10 years, meaning that mandatory spending will remain at high levels.

The spending for Iraq is a small part of the budget. I doubt it will be this high for ten years but even if it is its not an enormous part of the overall budget picture.

You act as if that is the only spending that is required of the US. Iraq and Afghanistan are on top of the typical spending the US experiences in any given year.

Of course, but I was already saying the same thing in different words. Exercising just a little disciple in spending and Iraq isn't such a big deal. Lose all discipline and getting rid of the cost of Iraq might not help much. Spending in Iraq hurts at the margin, and it is big enough to be noticeable but the projected increases in some other programs in the next ten years makes Iraq spending seem small.

You know, I can't do this.

OK then don't.
