I'm trying to peel "liberal" and "conservative" back to their essences.

Let's pick something that's not controversial. Slavery. Or the right of women to vote.

How was slavery ended in our country? Through Congress and the people amending the Constitution, but first, some states outlawed slavery within their own state limits.

How did women get the right to vote in this country? Again, through Congress and the people amending the Constitution, but first, some states gave women the right to vote within their own state limits.

A conservative is happy with this process, the rule of law, the use of democracy to achieve worthy goals.

These days, liberals find this process too slow. If they don't like something, abolish it via judicial fiat.
