Carter was not a "lefty". What drugs are you on?
Carter was not a successful president, but it's also unfair to blame him for Iran, the crushing Vietnam War debt and the Arab energy embargo. Iran was falling apart years before that. Carter was also very unlocky that his rescue mission failed (or was sabotaged). If he had successfully rescued the hostages he would have been re-elected.
