When you talk about liberals being "for" the environment, that isn't the same as saying they are for gay rights, because liberals really are "for" the environment, while, when it comes to "gay rights", they are really "for" universal fair rights for everyone (imo), and gay rights in isolation is kind of a misnomer, for the general liberal community, imo, since it is part of the larger issue of rights for all groups (though I am sure gay liberals are "for" gay rights, in a very special interest sort of way- but you seemed to be talking about all liberals, and making some general kind of argument). I still think you've confused two issues in your framing of the discussion.
